Dom

Montgomery had made his move, and I couldn’t help but feel responsible. If I hadn’t forced his hand by rattling a few cages, maybe he wouldn’t have had to send a message. Maybe Robin would still be alive.

I sat at Cecil Court’s kitchen table alone. The clock ticked. The faucet dripped into a sink full of dishes.

The IRL had come to Ravenscourt and taken Kempthorne away while the cops were still working the crime scene. They’d had an anonymous tip: Alexander Kempthorne might be an unregistered latent. The anonymous snitch had provided CCTV footage of Kempthorne using his trick, or so I’d overheard.

They’d shoved Kempthorne into the back of an IRL van as though he were some stray dog they planned on beating, and slammed the doors on him. He hadn’t fought. I almost wished he had.

I’d given my statement to the Met. Told them how Annie had burst in, brandishing a dirty artifact, and how she’d killed Robin. I’d acted in both self-defense and to protect Kempthorne and Gina. I’d used reasonable and proportionable force in killing her. I was still an agent, so I had that in my favor, although my escape from Wordsworth had raised a few eyebrows. As far as the cops were concerned, I’d been cleared of being a serial killer, but I was also a latent who happened to keep getting mixed up in bad shit. They had kept me in as long as they legally could but eventually released me without pressing charges.

Gina had given a statement, too, as far as I knew, but she wasn’t at Cecil Court and she wasn’t answering her phone. I didn’t even know if Kempthorne was coming back.

Was Kempthorne & Co a thing anymore?

The used mugs stacked on the kitchen drainer, the jar of custard cream biscuits on the side, and Robin’s chair beside mine. It all felt so… empty. Death wasn’t supposed to take her. Me, sure. I’d come close often enough. But not her.

It had broken Kempthorne.

He hadn’t spoken when we’d sat in the misty field. He’d only nodded when the IRL cuffed him. He’d never looked so beaten. It had taken every ounce of control I had not to break him out.

So now I waited, in the cold and the quiet and the dark of Cecil Court. Waited to see what happened next because I had no fucking idea where to go or what to do. Robin was gone. Gina probably wasn’t coming back. If the IRL had any solid evidence on Kempthorne, they’d shove him into Wordsworth so bloody fast his lawyers wouldn’t be able to stop it. Where did that leave me? This place, these people, they’d become my whole life. I loved them.

The front bell buzzed.

I dragged a hand down my face, brushing off cold tears.

The bell buzzed again.

Robin usually had the front door video feed on her laptop. I didn’t even know where her laptop was.

The bell buzzed again.

“For fuck’s sake.” I trudged down the stairs and yanked open the door.
